At one point in the recording of this album, when things seemed bleak, like we'd never get it done, never get to do this music, George was driving home from Milwaukee on Hwy. 43. As he approached Elkhorn, off to his right was a small lake and it was covered in fog. The idea came how that is exactly how he felt at the moment and he started writing it as he finished the drive. Finished writing it that night. It really is about the frustrations of not getting to where you wanna be or what you wanna do. All apologies to Carl Sandburg and Langston Hughes.
lyrics
What is the matter with me?
So out of sorts inside
Am I too blind to see?
The lasting peace denied
Like fog on water it creeps up on me (Chorus)
Just fog on water on little cat feet
Fog on water it gets the best of me
Fog on water throws me to my knees (Guitar) Am F G E Am
I feel a shadow of change in me
Flowing in waves beneath my skin
Is this the way it’s supposed to be?
At an end before I begin (Chorus) (Guitar)
They say every dog has his day
But the dream’s deferred suspended in time
Elusive is the day to find a way
To play these songs to write these rhymes
(Chorus) (Guitar)
